Dream Jobs 2009

NOISEfestival.com is more than just a virtual gallery for the best in new talent. NOISE also provides its artists with opportunities to get involved in new projects and to make contacts with people who already work in the creative industries. The NOISE Dream Jobs project offers young creatives the chance to work with companies at the top of their field in the creative industries, giving them workplace experience and great skills to add to their CV. In June 2008, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, launched ‘NOISE Dream Jobs’ at the NOISE office in Manchester.

Companies offering placements for NOISE Dream Jobs in 2009 include the iconic Attik Design agency of NOISE curator James Sommerville, Wayne Hemingway of Hemingway Design will be taking on a further 6 placements, NOISE Architecture curator company Zaha Hadid Architects, Wallpaper manufacturer Graham & Brown, architecture magazine Blueprint, and BBC Television who have offered ten NOISE artists placements in production facilities across the regions.

NOISE Blog: AbbysDreamJob.spaces.live.com

Abby Brazier Last year as part of NOISE 2008, Abby Brazier was one of five designers handpicked by leading designer and NOISE Curator for Product Design, Tom Dixon. Sheffield Hallam University graudate Abby designed an innovative cocoon – like shelter system for helping keep homeless people clean and dry on the streets. Her design not only caught the eye of Tom Dixon and the NOISE Team, but also Wayne Hemingway, who offered her a two week work placement with him and the Hemingway Team at their design HQ in London.
Starting in June, Abby got stuck in with some hands on design, creating graphics, mock-ups and images that have made it straight onto the Hemingway Design website.
Abby says “It's been great to be involved in some really creative work again, it's reminded me that this is definitely what I want to do!! Thanks Hemingway Design, and thanks NOISE!”

Here's a small chunk of Abby's on the job blog, click the link above for more posts and lots of pics of her Dream Job designs.

I've won the placement!
"Last week I had a phone call from NOISE Festival saying that they were putting me forward for a NOISE Dream Jobs placement. Then I got another call the same day saying my work had been sent to Hemingway Design in London, and that they wanted to take me on for a two week placement!! It was so out of the blue, but also SO exciting!! I couldn't, and still can't believe it! I'm really looking forward to going to Hemingway. Their design philosophy (check out the Hemingway design website) is completely what I believe. This placement is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I plan to make the most of it."

Ying-Wen Chang

Ying-Wen Chang We knew Ying-Wen an Interior & Spatial Design graduate from Chelsea College of Art & Design would be right at home working alongside the editorial team at ‘design bible’,'Blueprint Magazine'. Now its 25th year the architecture and design monthly took a keen interest in Ying-Wen’s work and offered her a NOISE Dream Job work placement. Currently undertaking her Dream Job, Ying-Wen’s busy helping write previews for the next issue and reviews for the Blueprint blog. She also keeps seeing a strange green tellytubby in office ever Friday (no, we can’t work it out either)...

See a sneak preview of Ying – Wen’s blog below and click here for the full, unedited version...

29th May 2009

Day three: Hand on Previews
"After discussing with Peter, we finalised 16 previews to work on, 6 in London, 6 around UK and 4 international. Great! Writing time! (approx) 70 words each, 110 words for two features, so it's 70 x 14 + 110 x 2 = 1200 words!

It's always good to have something after lunch to wind up the working mood again, and that can be some sweet or few puffs from cigarette.

Receiving the fresh-printed July issue in the afternoon. Flip through the content and also take a break from tapping the keyboard, phew...."

Graphic designer Matt, met Greg Burne from 'Big Active' creative talent agency, at the NOISE Creative Futures event in Manchester last November, and after his people had a word with their people, found himself with a NOISE Dream Job placement.
Whilst at Big Active, Matt has been set the mission of making a press book, which will involve scanning, cropping, resizing all the press cuttings they’ve collected over the past couple of years. Then he’ll get a chance to work on his own projects and illustrations.

Here's Matt, Day Eight in the Big Active office...

23rd April 2009

DAY Eight
"I got to have a butchers at the Beck limited edition vinyl which is pretty much amazing!
Last night I ended up going to the pub for a quick drink with Marcus and Mat last night and got chatting about all manner of things, as a result this morning Marcus and Mat both had a look at my website and while we were out I asked if either of them had any projects coming up that I could help with and this morning Mat said I could help him on one of his as unnamed projects for a band I don't think I can name for legal reasons.
My ring bound portfolio turned up in the post and I carried on scanning, cropping and dropping images for the press book for the rest of the day."

Alex Haines

Alex Haines from Ipswich is a multi-talented artist who specialises in traditional artwork as well computer based graphic design. His work ‘Glass SoHo’, taken from his 3D collection of works, entitled Xtropolis, is a visual of a never-built London housing estate concept. This innovative design struck a chord with Wayne Hemingway who invited Alex to work alongside him at Hemingway Design for 2 week Dream Job placement.

Since graduating from Huddersfield University, the Alex has been desperately seeking his ideal job, to enable him to pursue his dream. Alex says:
"I'm very excited about the whole experience. Hopefully by the end of the two weeks I will have made some new friends, have absorbed some creative and professional inspiration, and have added impetus to get out there and kickstart my career!"
Here’s a peek at what Alex has been getting up to down at Hemingway Design. Click on the link above to read his full blog.

6th May 2009

DAY 1 & 2
“I turned up in plenty of time for day one, and despite there being a classic car with HEM on the number plate parked outside, I still had to call Hemingway Design to find out exactly what building they were in!

Day One involved working on a logo for a recycling company, and designing a t shirt for the charity Actionaid…Day two involved revising one my t shirt designs, and working on a redesign of the classic trouser-press. So far I've come up with the idea of an exercise treadmill-cum-trouser press that involves running to power up the press, and a trouser-press with a fold-out games board, just to try and make the old trouser press a bit more interesting!”

Starting in June, see below for the first post of Celine's rather excitable Dream Job blog!

March 9th 2009
2 days to go!
"I still can't really believe this is happening to me, and why... It's amazing yet very bizarre. Let me explain:
A few weeks ago I got a call from Noise Festival asking a few questions...
Do you have a job? yes...
Can you take time off? yes...
Where do you live? Cornwall...
Can you stay in London if necessary? well yes... but what exactly is this about?
We are considering you for a Dream Job placement at Hemingway Design.
There I nearly dropped the phone, managed to say thank you very much and ran around the room like a lunatic ...
Just a week later they phoned back, confirming I would be doing the placement.

So, here I am now, just a day before getting the train to London, rather excited, somewhat nervous! I've been asked to ponder on a few ideas for Monday ... 'for a new product, new avenue, or something that will improve on something we already do’. So I'll be sketching away and hopefully get a few bits together for the big day.
Check out www.hemingwaydesign.co.uk!"

NOISE artists selected for DreamJob placements

In 2006 NOISE secured work placements with Wayne Hemingway's company, Hemingway Design; MTV London and Sao Paolo; and Cheshire-based Mackinnon and Saunders, providers of animation puppets and models for Hollywood film Director, Tim Burton, among others.

Wayne Hemingway offered six work placements at Hemingway Design. He says, "NOISEfestival.com is a crucial initiative that will not only enhance our cultural well being but also benefit the nation's economic well being. The UK's manufacturing economy has declined but our creative sectors are booming with a current contribution to the economy of some £14 billion. NOISE is good for the pocket and for the soul."

Hannah and Jenny

Hannah Caughlin and Jenny Campbell-Colquhoun

As part of NOISE 2006 'DreamJobs'; NOISE sent two graduate graphic designers to MTV Brazil. Hannah Caughlin and Jenny Campbell-Colquhoun collectively known as 'The Long Way Round', were chosen by NOISE 2006 Curator for moving image, Cristian Jofre, (MTV Networks Senior Vice President Marketing and Creative Director). Their animation, 'What Will we do when we Leave Art School?' humorously documents the trials, tribulations and fears faced by fresh graduates upon leaving university.

Following on from their selection, Hannah and Jenny (www.NOISEfestival.com/thelongwayround) spent two weeks working at the MTV Brazil headquarters in San Paulo. Here they produced three 15 second idents for the station, (in both English and Portuguese!) that were screened on MTV Brazil to an audience of millions.

Rodrigo Pimenta, from MTV Brazil said, "The visit was a great success. The girls were really cool and worked very hard!"?

Of their DreamJob Hannah and Jenny added; "Thanks to NOISE we have some truly valuable additions to out C.V and showreel and felt encouraged to take the work we do together seriously"?.

The girls also kept NOISE up to date with what was going down in Brazil with some very cool video diaries.
