introduction

Albertine seeks to investigate the parameters of the photographic portrait, considering the modernist motifs of equivalence, multiplicity, and the fragmented presentation of the ‘self’. The work aspires to reject the purely literal surface readings of each individual image associated with the conventional notions of portraiture; working toward eschewing the singular identifying portrait and replacing it with a multiplicity of images that accentuate and explore the limitless discursive constructibility of the human face when presented in the photograph. Shifting from evidence to evasiveness, there is an erasure of individual identity, considering the relativity of truth in regard to representation within the portrait and how meaning is composed through the eyes of the photographer and the viewer, as opposed to an empirical reality composed fully from external signifiers. The work understands that by isolating a singular fragmented aspect of an object, through the process of photography, the viewer is never truly able to understand the natural universal state of the thing photographed; each facet displayed becomes of equal value but simultaneously insignificant. By accepting that a portrait cannot be definitive, Albertine instead hopes to converse through the formal properties of the photograph, creating a representation which is fluid and mutable, continually dispersing and reconstructing. The face becomes a nomadic subject in the constant process of becoming, it’s whole essentially non-existent as it is re-constructed with every reading.

Photographer based in London/Nottingham.
