Jamie Shipston

I am a street photographer and conceptual artist that deals with highlighting current social issues.

introduction

Art is a form of investigation and expression. And it seems that I am always investigating the same subjects, and expressing them through photography. These themes often fall into similar areas, the attraction to death, which then leads to the fear of death. Loneliness driving you to seek someone, seeking someone which will most likely generate a clash leading to a battle and conflict. This generates a winner and a loser. Whatever the outcome you have no choice in the end but to fade away and no longer exist.

The territories I am currently trying to place myself within and explore are all about expressing what is real and happening, it has no room for the dilettante. From an early age, I have always been enthusiastic about creating work that is real and expressive and I have always been against work that is corporate or an imitation. The works of Marina Abramovic, Yoko Ono, David Lynch, Wolf Vostell, William Eggleston and Victor Burgin have been very influential to me and who’s art motivates me to create, Their work illustrates current issues and leave the audience trying to make sense of what they have seen. This is the kind of work that pushes me to express my ideas. My practise is influenced mainly by 3 movements these are the surrealist and fluxus movements and street photography.
