introduction

On the one hand, my work is an analysis of the contemporary times in which I live, presented in grotesque fashion to force the viewer to reflect on the world. We live in a world devoted to presenting things in an aesthetically pleasing way, and I believe that this often leads to a loss of integrity. On the other hand, my work is concerned with the psychology of people and objects and the impact that this has on them, hence the themes of neoplasm, thinness and twisting. Coming from the world of graphic design and fashion, illustration has led me to develop more focused techniques in the digital and stamping worlds, hence the use of layered collages with digital prints, flat areas of color and, of course, drawing. The creative process is always implicit in the final work, trying to show dimension lines, unpainted parts, notes, sketches and pieces of tape. Dealing with human attributes using such everyday techniques becomes a very spontaneous process that can act as a mirror to the soul of the beholder.

Joan Taltavull is both a designer and an artist. Due to the grotesque characters which appear in his work resulting from the multiplicity of influences such as constant research of new effects on paper and canvas, he does not fall into any artistic categories. Born in Barcelona in 1988, son of a Catalan mother and Minorcan father, he moved to Menorca at the age of 8, a place where he really started to shape himself . He received his primary and secondary education at Ciutadella, where he was quickly noticed for his drawing skills, standing out both in technical and artistic subjects. Advised by his teachers, he got his baccalaureate at Mahon Arts School, where he focused entirely his artistic studies on graphic design and drawing. In Mahon, he won the decorating and aesthetics newly created ‘Punt Jove’ contest. With a friend he created the T-shirt brand ‘Seducteur’ in which sickly looking women were stamped, searching for controversy and criticism from the fashion world. At 19 he moved to Barcelona to study fashion design at the ‘European Institute Di Design’. Standing out in illustration and pattern in the same year he began to alternate his studies with work as a draughtsman for fashion brands such as Zara Trf, Pull and Bear, Punto Roma, Massimo Dutty and Bershka, while learning how to draw for a wide range of public to meet the various demands of the fashion world. Besides, he has worked on other disciplines like shoe designing as well as creating illustrations of opera characters. In 2012 he finished his studies after handing in his thesis at which moment he was honored by opening the fashion school’s catwalk and participating in the ‘Moda FAD’. This collection already showed a total obsession with body disfigurement in women and the impact of psychology on the physical body. In the same year he began designing accessories for Custo Barcelona. His speed, efficiency and rapport with their creative director, redefined his role in the company, by passing through various departments in which he created prints, posters as well as designed magazines, catalogues, furniture, stores and showrooms. He also excelled at designing shop windows and setting up fairs. His influences came from different sources; a rebellious adolescence led him to the graffiti and skate style. Later he went through a series of major influences from the great figures of the expressionism such as Egon Schiele, Picasso and Toulouse-Lautrec, fashion illustration by Laura Laine and Arturo Elena, the punk style of John John Jesse to Alexander McQueen’s gothic style with his dark and sometimes grotesque outfits and staging. He mixed the technical drawing, furniture and interior design with architectural shapes of the Gothic and Baroque. In the past two years he has worked in downtown Barcelona, where he has had the opportunity to learn and dabble in the tattoo world. The last year he decided to leave the fashion world, in order to apply what he has learnt over the years and commit himself to his enriched personal artwork.
