introduction

Using the process of construction and deconstruction as a central component to my artistic practice, I endeavour to explore how various mediums can be adapted, adjusted, or layered by assembling and integrating elements.

I am a contemporary artist, composer and musician working within the intersection of visual art, sonic art and the surrounding environment. As a musician primarily existing within the popular music sector, my practice has been bound to the compositional confinements of conventional music that is determined by a series of rules and also restrictions often presented by the spaces in which it is performed. Moving away from these confinements, I aspire to evolve my work through experimenting with alternative processes of creating and exhibiting sound.

Site and Sound: Acousmatic Spaces and Sonic Environments

Role:

Exhibiting Artist

Location:

Hanover Project, Preston

Site and Sound: Acousmatic Spaces and Sonic Environments is an exhibition which explores the relationship between acoustic space and physical space, interrogating perceptions of location, environment and site through sound.

Each of the works featured in the exhibition represents a close engagement with the role played by sounds in defining how a given place or moment in time might be experienced, remembered or perceived. Through processes of field recording, improvisation and experimental composition, selected works recontextualise and respond to specific locations, provoking insights of a philosophical, intellectual and existential nature into the experience of occupying and imagining such spaces.

Key works in the exhibition also explore the potential of sound to alter perceptions and experiences of a physical space, creating new environments through the installation of sonic material. Defined by Richard Kostelanetz as an ‘artistically enhanced’ space, acoustic environments of this kind give the site, ‘an esthetic character that it would not otherwise have …thanks to what the artist does, the space itself becomes a surrounding work of art.’

Site and Sound: Acousmatic Spaces and Sonic Environments will feature the work of artists including David Toop, Leanne Cunningham, Lianray Pienaar, John J. Campbell, Owl Project, Colin Fallows, Paul Rooney, Richard Skelton and Eimer Birkbeck.

PRIOR

Role:

Artist, Exhibition Coordinator and Assistant.

Location:

Hanover Project, Preston

Existing or coming before in time, order, or importance…

Artists are questioning and exploring photography as a research tool for developing work.

Presented is a selection of work that explores the relationship between 6 artists using photography as a starting point from which further work is developed.

The work demonstrates the pre existence of an initial ‘happening’ that is no longer a necessity for the future project outcome. The photographs displayed will no longer be visible in the outcome of each individual’s project, however will be extant in the context of process.

This black and white photography is a necessary by-product of another outcome, but for the purpose of Prior, should be read as the outcome or as a series of notes.

The sound piece will be performed by a selection of exhibiting artists in relation to the photographs presented.

Sonic Terrain - World Listening Day 2014 Compilation

Space as Outlined featured on 'Directions' compilation. The variety of places, submissions and ears augmented this year not only in terms of numbers, but also in the diversity of the material itself. It has been an amazing journey to listen to all of these great sounds and moments.

Space as Outline | ZEEN

The idea that sound - as a constructive material - can regenerate our experience of a given space has influenced my decision to develop work for a specific location, and in my pursuit of a suitable unconventional/non-art space I discovered a disused railway tunnel near Old Warden (UK).
