Marco Monterzino

Marco's ongoing personal research and critical design practice feed into his commercial work and vice versa. His work has ethnographic and narrative qualities which attracted a lot of interest from high-end and luxury brands internationally. / He is currently based in East London and in November 2012 his work was exhibited during the "Digital Futures" event at the V&A. / In December 2012 his project "DIY Political Engagement:The Ark of Many Voices" featured on Blueprint Magazine as one of the most interesting projects of the 2012 edition of the London Design Festival.

introduction

The designer must be aware of his role: either to create needs or to contribute in creating cultural capital.

Marco Monterzino was born in Torino (Italy) in 1984. He learned how to knock a nail into wood with his grand father as a small child and kept “getting his hands dirty” since. His education is grounded in classical studies and foreign languages. Through a series of extensive travels to Europe, America, Australia and Africa he has expanded his views and learned about the beauty of diversity. The BA degree in communication design obtained at Politecnico di Torino led him towards his first professional experiences in Italy. For two years he cut his teeth in an industrial design consultancy where he started from a junior designer position to become a team leader involved in strategic design, exhibition design and product design projects. In order to refine his skills as an industrial designer he moved to London to undertake the MA Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins.

Recommendations:

'Marco Monterzino – had the task of designing a lighter for a highly exclusive company. << I searched for ideas for a long time, I played with forms and tried out luxury materials. Then one day I saw how a man gave light to a woman he did not know. There was a gust of wind, they came closer for a moment and her hands touched his. That's when I had my inspiration.>> He recognized that the beauty lays in the act of giving fire, so he conceived a model that stressed this interplay between two strangers.' Sacha Batthyany, CREDO LGT magazine, May 2012 --- --- --- 'Many people talk the talk, but not that many walk the walk. Marco Monterzino, does both – he talks and walks politics. A product designer by training, following the August 2011 UK riots – so vehemently fuelled by the mass need to own branded goods – he began to question the very meaning of the objects he was creating.' Johnny Tucker, Blueprint Magazine, December 2012

Recommendations:

In my capacity as coordinator and professor of the product design course at the turin branch of IED, European Design Institute, and as designer and manager of 'Design GANG' firm in Turin, I have had the opportunity to work with Marco and to acknowledge and appreciate his personal and technical skills. He's a very proactive and curious person, always ready to face challenging situations with a determined type of approach. As professional Marco Monterzino had developed an accurate design method which combines the requirements coming from customers with those of the end users. When involved in product-related projects, he demonstrated to have outstanding technical understanding, problem solving skills and creativity. A very good team player, I heartily recommend him.
