introduction

The theme of the work embodies the fleeting moment of time, concentrating on grief, loss and memory. With intrigue into the raw image, the work steers away from computer manipulated imagery and attempts to go against the rules of digital photography. Using natural materials from the environment to create effects sometimes creates unusual effects to distort perspective and create ambiguity. Colour, shape and forms are altered through an imaginative process, with images resembling paintings and old damaged photographs.

‘A Trace of Life’ investigates grief, loss and the reflection of memory. Naturally drawn towards the subject after losing my father to cancer and witnessing the intense deterioration to his body, I felt compelled to investigate nature’s process and gather more sense of it. I began honing into the significance of time and its reoccurring effects. Feeling anxious from pressures and work deadlines built a constraint from spending time with family and the fear of losing them began to niggle within. With the pressure to keep up with the pace of societal pressures and feeling unable to grieve naturally I had to explore these feelings further. I began taking pictures through windows, reflective surfaces and decaying elements, capturing times murky residue hanging over the subjects. Like snapshots from a discarded family album; faded and damaged over time, the images are often fragmented and distorted. In a sense the images are like a vision, a reflection of the past through memory but also reveal the inevitability of our own fate. The subjects are like ambiguous apparitions because they are transient, like spirits in limbo.
