Martyn Mills

Although a self-confessed lone-wolf / I'll always be the last to leave the party. As such I love the opportunity to explore new contexts: especially through collaboration with others / in scale / the approach to materials or the ideas themselves. Whatever the medium I always strive to create work of international standing and impact. I travel where the project dictates... representing locally and creating globally! / I produce work for exhibition on a yearly basis / and have enjoyed being part of a number of highly praised solo and group shows over the last 8 years. Alongside my exhibition work / I also take on commissions from commercial / creative / cultural and/or educational organisations / compiling a specially selected and diverse list of clients / such as Manchester City Council / Wagamama (noodle bar franchise) and Carhartt (clothing/streetwear brand). What are the values of the project and am the right artist to represent these values?.. is my main reasoning before taking on a project.

introduction

A name chosen because of its immediate connotations of a person sacrificing material well being in order to focus on their artwork, as starvinartist my aim has always been to produce work that engages and provokes thought, inspires and excites experience, as well as entertaining and answering those inner voices and questions within myself.

In 2005 I began working under the nom-de-plume "starvinartist". Since then I’ve developed the pseudonym into both a creative practice and philosophical approach to working, focusing upon visual art and creative education.

In 2005 I began working under the nom-de-plume "starvinartist". Since then I’ve developed the pseudonym into both a creative practice and philosophical approach to working, focusing upon visual art and creative education. A name chosen because of its immediate connotations of a person sacrificing material well being in order to focus on their artwork, as starvinartist my aim has always been to produce work that engages and provokes thought, inspires and excites experience, as well as entertaining and answering those inner voices and questions within myself.

Although a self-confessed lone-wolf, I'll always be the last to leave the party. As such I love the opportunity to explore new contexts: especially through collaboration with others, in scale, the approach to materials or the ideas themselves. Whatever the medium I always strive to create work of international standing and impact. I travel where the project dictates... representing locally and creating globally!

I produce work for exhibition on a yearly basis, and have enjoyed being part of a number of highly praised solo and group shows over the last 8 years. Alongside my exhibition work, I also take on commissions from commercial, creative, cultural and/or educational organisations, compiling a specially selected and diverse list of clients, such as Manchester City Council, Wagamama (noodle bar franchise) and Carhartt (clothing/streetwear brand). What are the values of the project and am the right artist to represent these values?.. is my main reasoning before taking on a project.

Two of my key achievements to date would include:

The development of the Bed and Breakfast Festival 2009 in collaboration with Untitled BCN; Held in Barcelona, Spain, UK based artists where invited to stay, exhibit, paint and network with local artists, who in turn provided the visitors with said bed and breakfast. The participating artists collaborated with key local galleries, stores and public sites on a number of events over 3 days, including exhibitions, live painting and an artists market.

The development of the Gallery Project through 2012-2013 in collaboration with key host organisations; A series of monthly exhibitions supporting and showcasing local talent, held at historical landmarks, creative hubs and pop-up sites, within Salford, Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield. A platform for emerging artists and a means of developing a creative bridge between Lancashire and Yorkshire, while giving the participating artists an opportunity to sell work within bustling retail centres.
