Rachel Nicholas

Musician

introduction

I want to make music

Rachel Nicholas is an English composer and singer-songwriter. Beginning her musical journey playing piano and viola, in orchestras and chamber groups, Rachel ended up studying composition at Birmingham Conservatoire where she was able to immerse herself in the world of contemporary music. It was perhaps a combination of her passion for so many types of music and slightly offbeat personality that has enabled her to develop a distinct ‘intimate’, ‘intriguing’ and ‘witty’ style, which, although spanning many genres manages to maintain a strong compositional voice. Rachel has begun to build a solid reputation as a composer-performer, performing or being in some way involved in her own works wherever possible. Her approach to composition is often multidisciplinary and dips into visual art and music theatre. Many of her compositions also include electroacoustic elements, often drawing on selected sounds from daily life. As a performer she has been a core member of Birmingham-based 101 New Music Theatre as well as participating in several other new music projects. It was not until 2011 that Rachel got her first taste of songwriting, but by summer of 2012, she had independently released ‘Invisible Girl’, an album of self composed, arranged and performed songs. Her music has been workshopped by The Schubert Ensemble of London, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, and played in concert by Decibel ensemble and Thumb. Recently, Rachel contributed music to a short animation by Carolina Melis for Chloe. In 2013, Rachel curated a concert entitled ‘Mersey Sound’ where a specially formed ensemble of composer-performers played Rachel’s own Merseyside-inspired soundscape for live ensemble and tape, preceded by a showcase of short works by local emerging composers, alongside pieces by renowned composer Howard Skempton who also performed at the event.

Mersey Sound

In 2013, I curated a concert entitled ‘Mersey Sound’ where a specially formed ensemble of composer-performers played my own Merseyside-inspired soundscape for live ensemble and tape, preceded by a showcase of short works by local emerging composers, alongside pieces by renowned composer Howard Skempton who also performed at the event.  As well as championing the homegrown talent the region has to offer, I wanted to bring contemporary music to new audiences who may not have encountered it before.

Here is the poster for the event:
