Thris Tian

DJ/ Boiler Room Co-Founder

introduction

“WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR IS A GREAT IDEA. SOMETHING THAT’S TRANSFERABLE, THAT APPEALS TO DIFFERENT KINDS OF PEOPLE, THAT HAS AN IDENTITY AND THAT IS TRUE TO ITSELF. SOMETHING THAT’S SUSTAINABLE. WHOEVER I PICK, I’LL HELP IN WHATEVER WAY I CAN TO DEVELOP THE PERSON AND THEIR IDEAS, LINK THEM UP WITH MY KIND OF PEOPLE.”

East Londoner Thristian was one of the founding masterminds behind Boiler Room TV, the world’s leading underground music show. Always multi-national in his music selection, Thristian makes a point of always hunting for new music, whenever, wherever he is. Originally the programmer for Boiler Room, Thristian is now responsible for lining up musical acts that are diverse and eclectic, a theme that has become synonymous with the Boiler Room image. Thristian completed a musical apprenticeship at record label Brownswood Recordings for Gilles Peterson (what radio stations has Giles worked for?) , where he began to research for Gilles’ radio shows and gigs, as well as talent scouting for the label. It was this that allowed him to develop as a DJ and taught him to embrace a range of international musical styles. He went on to work at the legendary record store Sound of Universe and their label Soul Jazz. Every Sunday night on NTS, Thristian heads up the Dark N’ Lovely Global Roots show, where listeners can never be sure what to expect with genres like West African grooves to Norwegian Gospel making appearances. Based in Hackney, he explores the musical world from Harlem to Hiroshima and has gigged alongside the likes of Jamie XX, Eryka Badu and Q-Tip, just to name a few.

What's Happening

Enterprise

Boiler Room TV

Role:

Co-founder

The Boiler Room, dates back just four years, when Blaise Bellville edited a magazine called Platform and Thristian spun at the hippest warehouse parties in East London. Bellville invited Thristian to create a live-streamed mix for the magazine. That project's popularity led to more streams, with Bellville ultimately spinning off the concept into the Boiler Room, a series of mix sessions broadcast from too-cool-for-school, invite-only club nights now spanning the globe.

Employment

Sound of the Universe & Soul Jazz

Location:

London

Thris Tian took to heart as he began working at legendary London record store Sound of the Universe and their label Soul Jazz, gathering a wealth of experience and vinyl along the way.

Employment

Brownswood Recordings

A musical apprenticeship with Gilles Peterson at his record label Brownswood Recordings provided a solid foundation and saw Thris Tian naturally graduate to researching for Gilles’ radio shows and gigs, as well as A&Ring for the label. The most important lesson imparted by Peterson was the confidence to develop as a DJ on “instinct” and to embrace the broader spectrum of music from scenes around the world.
